Drones Impact German Airport Operations

Analysis by the German Aerospace Center shows that airport costs are rising due to the increasing number of drone flight incidents. Last year alone, 226 incidents were recorded, leading to partial or complete closures at 25 airports. These incidents caused direct damages estimated at around 60 million euros, which could reach up to 160 million euros when considering indirect costs. Most of these accidents are concentrated at major hubs such as Frankfurt and Munich, posing increasingly serious security threats to civil aviation. Legally, flying drones within 1.5 kilometers of airports is prohibited, with penalties including imprisonment for up to ten years.
