Referee from Brazil for opener

Brazilian referee Wilton Sampaio has been appointed to oversee the opening match of the 2026 World Cup between Mexico and South Africa, scheduled to be held in Mexico City. Sampaio is one of the top international referees, having participated in the 2022 World Cup and previously officiated matches in the 2018 edition using Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology.
