Algeria: Reasons for Candidacy Exclusion

The Algerian authorities announced that they have canceled or excluded hundreds of candidates from the upcoming parliamentary elections scheduled for July, due to their suspicious financial connections, legal judgments, or failure to meet legal requirements. A total of 1,762 candidates were disqualified because of their financial ties, in addition to the rejection of 1,141 other applications for judicial reasons. There are also restrictions related to age and mandatory military service. Women constitute 21% of the approved candidates, with a focus on young people and university graduates. Meanwhile, the judiciary has received over 2,000 appeals against the rejection decisions.
