Damascus begins Jewish cemetery restoration

Mosaic Foundation has begun restoring a Jewish cemetery in Damascus with the aim of preserving one of the historical sites linked to the Jewish community. The restoration work includes refurbishing and reinforcing the graves, as well as installing lighting systems and cameras to protect the site. The cemetery was not significantly damaged during the Syrian war and remains a symbol of Jewish heritage in Syria. Visits to the cemetery had ceased for decades but recently resumed as Syrian Jews returned to visit their ancestors’ graves. The Jewish community's population has declined from approximately 5,000 to just 6 people due to conflicts and restrictions. The first communal prayer in over 30 years took place in February 2025.
