Security researchers have revealed that inexpensive Android TV boxes can secretly route internet traffic through household connections, click on ads, spoof smartphones, and generate fraud without users’ knowledge. The operation, linked to a company called Zhejiang Fengwo IoT Technology, involves preinstalled software on some devices—particularly older H96 models—that could act as residential proxies and facilitate ad fraud. Although the devices may appear normal, malicious software can remain hidden, and factory resets might not remove the threat. Users are advised to verify device certification, avoid untrusted marketplaces, disconnect suspicious boxes, and consider replacing unverified devices to protect their networks.
