China restricts AI romantic ties

In early 2024, China implemented comprehensive regulations restricting "human-like" AI chatbots capable of sustained emotional interaction, mainly targeting virtual romantic and companionship apps. The rules limit access for minors, prohibit emotional dependence, and require transparency about AI identity, leading major companies to shut down their AI companionship features. Despite government claims of protecting mental health, critics suggest the regulations may also reflect efforts to reinforce traditional gender roles and address demographic decline, raising concerns over increased surveillance and personal freedoms.
