Mamdani Plans to Convert Manhattan Offices into Apartments

New York City plans to redevelop a government office building at 100 Gold Street in Lower Manhattan into approximately 4,000 residential units, including around 1,000 permanently affordable apartments supported by a cross-subsidy model. The project, announced as part of the city’s housing initiatives, will also add public amenities such as a fitness center and community space, with funding relying on market-rate apartments helping to subsidize affordable housing. Currently undergoing a formal review process, the development aims to significantly increase affordable housing in one of the city’s wealthiest districts, though it has faced community opposition over its scale and planning timeline.
