Iraq warns of Syria terror risk after US departure
The article reports on the recent U.S. withdrawal from Iraq, marking the end of Operation Inherent Resolve. President Trump declared it a victory over ISIS, with the terrorist group now severely degraded but still active in scattered cells across Iraq and Syria. Iraqi officials expressed concern about ISIS fighters potentially crossing from Syria into Iraq and emphasized their military readiness, even as discussions about future U.S.-Iraq security cooperation continue. The withdrawal follows years of U.S. involvement stemming from the 2003 invasion and subsequent efforts to defeat ISIS, while Iraq seeks to regain full security control and manage influence from Iran-backed militias.
