Blue state councilman mocks self-driving cars over pet deaths

A Minneapolis city council member, Jason Chavez, drew criticism after claiming that autonomous Waymo vehicles have killed cats and urging the requirement of a human operator in self-driving cars. The proposed ordinance, which would mandate human drivers and special licenses for such vehicles, narrowly passed but faces a veto from Mayor Jacob Frey, who supports embracing transportation innovation. Critics argued Chavez's focus on cats was an overreaction and highlighted larger issues facing the city, while supporters said requiring human drivers would hinder autonomous services and increase costs.
