Newsom imposes 25% tax on private detention centers
California Governor Gavin Newsom signed a bill imposing a 25% tax on private detention centers that partner with ICE, aiming to restrict federal immigration enforcement operations within the state. The law, set to take effect in 2028, seeks to increase costs for private contractors and potentially reduce detention capacity, raising concerns among immigration experts about the impact on ICE's ability to detain individuals. Critics argue the legislation may force ICE to seek alternative detention facilities outside California or repurpose federal properties.
