South Korea investigates abuse of disabled residents

A court in South Korea sentenced the director of a state-run care home to 15 years in prison for sexually abusing residents with intellectual disabilities over nearly a decade. The case involving multiple victims, including Seo Mi-hyeon, has raised serious concerns about protections for disabled individuals in institutional care. Despite increased legal efforts and inspections, abuse persisted at Saekdongwon until it was exposed following Seo’s injury and subsequent disclosure, prompting government investigations, facility closure, and calls for improved safeguards for residents.
