Pentagon ceases civilian faculty roles at military academies

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has ordered the U.S. military service academies to stop granting tenure to civilian faculty, aiming to refocus the institutions on warfighting rather than academic research and liberal arts education. Existing tenured faculty are generally unaffected, but the move signals a shift toward a narrower military educational mission, with officials citing concerns about academic stagnation and curriculum drift. The decision reflects broader conservative efforts to reshape military and higher education priorities, emphasizing a more focused, mission-driven approach.
