City Council delays $235M LAPD license plate system

The Los Angeles City Council voted to delay a $235-million, 10-year contract between the LAPD and Axon Enterprise for license plate readers and related technology. The decision was made due to concerns over privacy and potential misuse, including tracking individuals without proper oversight and sharing data with federal authorities. The council seeks further review of policies and safeguards before approving the deployment of these devices, which are intended to aid in criminal investigations but have raised civil liberty concerns.
