Weight-loss drugs linked to nail loss
Recent research indicates that people using GLP-1 medications for obesity or diabetes experience higher rates of nail detachment, discoloration, and hair loss compared to similar individuals not on these drugs. Studies involving over 1,800 participants across multiple countries found that two-thirds of GLP-1 users reported at least one nail issue, and half experienced unusual hair loss, with scalp inflammation often accompanying hair thinning. The findings suggest a possible association between GLP-1 treatments and these dermatological effects, though causality has not been established. Further research is planned to understand the timing and causes of these side effects.
