Private prison firm challenges California civil rights law

A private prison company, GEO Group, has filed a federal lawsuit challenging California’s new law, SB 942, which requires detention centers to provide rights such as medical care, privacy, and hygiene to immigrant detainees. The law was signed by Governor Gavin Newsom last week to oppose federal immigration enforcement policies, but GEO argues it oversteps state authority and conflicts with federal detention standards. The company operates multiple facilities in California under ICE contracts and has previously challenged similar laws.
