Colleges' Low Expulsion Rates for Sexual Violence

The article examines the rarity of expulsions and dismissals for sexual violence at major New York colleges, despite reports of sexual misconduct and investigations by Title IX offices. From 2018 to 2024, eleven large institutions did not expel any student or employee for sexual violence, even as hundreds of reports were received and dozens of perpetrators found responsible. Cornell University faced scrutiny over recent gang-rape allegations but expelled fewer than half those found responsible, with overall sanctions often limited to suspensions or training. The data highlights a disconnect between public expectations for holding offenders accountable and the actual disciplinary actions taken by colleges.
