Lake Powell levels decline reveal environmental issues

Low water levels in Lake Powell have revealed landscapes previously submerged for decades, severely impacting access to Rainbow Bridge National Monument, a sacred site on Navajo land. The reservoir's levels have dropped to about 22% capacity, resulting in the removal of boat docks and making access a challenging hike, which has reduced visitation from over 346,000 to much lower numbers. Environmental advocates attribute the decline to climate change and overconsumption of water, calling for dam bypass plans to restore natural flow and ecosystems, while local residents and tourists notice both the natural beauty and ongoing challenges caused by the drought.
