California EV grant program under scrutiny

California’s $1 billion Clean Truck and Bus Voucher Incentive Project, launched to promote zero-emission transportation, is now under investigation for alleged fraud, waste, and poor oversight. Officials are probing claims that some vehicle manufacturers received public funds for vehicles that were never built, with evidence suggesting possible manipulation of vehicle identification records to obtain multiple vouchers. Many program participants have had vehicles that underperform, break down, or ceased production, highlighting issues with vetting and record-keeping despite officials' assertions of a successful program that has saved significant emissions.
