R.I. Democratic Chair Urged to Resign Over Spouse's Fraud

Rhode Island Democratic Party Chairwoman Liz Beretta-Perik resigned after her husband, Michael Perik, was indicted on charges related to a scheme that stole approximately $20 million in federal and state financial aid funds from an Ohio community college. While Beretta-Perik is not charged, political leaders and candidates called for her to step down amid the allegations, which involve Perik's fraudulent control of funds and influence over a college that closed in 2025. The indictment accuses Perik of using multiple for-profit entities to divert aid and mislead regulators, contributing to the college's collapse.
