Pentagon authorizes DHS heat ray testing

The Pentagon has authorized the Department of Homeland Security to test a military-grade heat ray, known as the Active Denial System, at the US southern border. The nonlethal weapon emits an electromagnetic beam causing a burning sensation on the skin, with a range of over half a mile, and has been considered for crowd dispersal and border security purposes. The seven-month loan of the system begins in September, with DHS responsible for its operation and tactics, though previous concerns about legality, effectiveness, and humanitarian impact have limited its deployment history.
