Long Beach peninsula erosion worsens

Repeated tropical storms and powerful waves have significantly damaged homes and the historic boardwalk along Long Beach’s Alamitos Peninsula, which has struggled to recover despite ongoing sand replenishment efforts. The city plans to deposit 415,000 cubic yards of dredged sand along the shoreline to mitigate further damage, but it is uncertain whether the project will be completed in time to prevent more destruction during the upcoming winter El Niño conditions. The peninsula’s vulnerability stems from a gap in the existing breakwater, leaving part of the coastline exposed to waves from the south, resulting in severe erosion and structural damage. Despite years of efforts to protect the area, the recent intense storms have overwhelmed these measures, prompting the city to accelerate plans for a large-scale beach replenishment project.
