Meta to pay New Mexico 25B over data scandal

A judge ordered Meta to pay New Mexico $25 billion after a jury found the company liable for deceiving users about privacy and violating consumer protection laws. The verdict is the largest fine against Meta, stemming from allegations that Facebook misled users about data breaches and allowed harmful content and misinformation to spread. The case focused on Facebook's role in the Cambridge Analytica scandal and its impact on New Mexican residents, with the state seeking damages to fund education and stop similar practices. Meta plans to appeal the decision.
