Machover's AI Symphony Challenges Tech Fears

Tod Machover, a composer and MIT Media Lab faculty director, is integrating artificial intelligence into a live orchestral performance with the Boston Symphony Orchestra, premiering his piece “already and not yet.” The AI system improvises alongside human musicians, listening to their playing and generating variations in real time, highlighting that technology can be used creatively to enhance human musical expression rather than replace it. Machover aims to demonstrate the positive potential of AI in music while emphasizing the importance of active musical engagement.
