Fed timeline questions migrant baby court report
Federal officials have clarified that a 1-year-old migrant child was not left without legal representation in immigration court, citing a timeline showing that legal service providers intervened after initial hearings. The Office of Refugee Resettlement (ORR) attributed early lapses to contractor failures, specifically with the Acacia Center for Justice, which did not file notice of appearance for the child, resulting in no attorney present at the first court hearing. The contract with Acacia, awarded under the Biden administration, was dissolved due to these shortcomings, and the ORR transitioned legal services to the U.S. Committee for Refugees and Immigrants (USCRI), which now actively represents migrant children in court. Officials emphasized efforts to ensure legal representation for all children in immigration proceedings amid ongoing oversight improvements.
