Ziad Rahbani, an innovative composer

Ziad Rahbani, an innovative composer

Ziad Rahbani is a unique Lebanese composer, born on December 31, 1955. He is regarded as one of the most prominent innovators in contemporary Arabic music and theater. Growing up in the Rahbani family household, his literary and musical talent left a lasting mark from a young age, as he began writing lyrics and composing melodies early on. In 1971, at the age of sixteen, he composed his first songs, and later, in 1973, he performed a song dedicated to his mother, Fairouz. This marked the beginning of his career as an independent composer known for his innovative and satirical style, which reflected Lebanese reality in a critical and creative manner. After the death of his father, the renowned artist Assi Rahbani, in 1986, he moved towards renewal in theater and music, producing famous plays such as "Long American Film" and "Foolish Person," which addressed political and social issues with satire and critique. He was distinguished by a musical style that blends jazz with traditional Eastern influences, composing numerous songs and plays that have become part of the Arab artistic memory, notably Fairouz's songs like "People Asked About You, My Love" and "How Are You." Despite his sudden passing on July 26, 2025, his musical legacy and the creative faces he presented remain firmly rooted, confirming that he was a pioneering composer ahead of his time and a testament to his artistic genius that transcended time.
