Researchers at Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence have developed a benchmark to assess AI models' ability to understand and interact with Arab culture, utilizing 13 different local dialects from various Arab countries. The test showed that the models perform well—approximately 95% accuracy—in correctly identifying culturally appropriate responses when switching from Modern Standard Arabic to these dialects. However, their performance drops significantly when attempting to speak or translate in these dialects, revealing a gap in the AI's ability to preserve the identity and cultural nuances of each dialect. The results highlight the importance of diversifying and enriching training data to improve AI's natural interaction with Arab communities, supporting the UAE's national AI strategy.
