Egyptian team creates nanoparticle treatment for vaginal fungi

A research team from various Egyptian universities has developed a promising nanotherapy to combat vaginal fungal infections caused by Candida albicans. These infections are common and may recur or not respond to traditional treatments. The new therapy repurposes a well-known drug, atorvastatin—commonly used to lower cholesterol—and encases it within a hybrid nanocarrier that combines Zn-MOFs (zinc-based metal-organic frameworks) with flexible nanovesicles. The aim is to improve the delivery of the active substance to the infected tissues. Preliminary laboratory tests demonstrated that the formulation could eliminate fungal colonies with 100% inhibition and reduce inflammation, without causing tissue irritation. However, this technology is still in the experimental stage and requires further research before it can be used clinically. The study seeks to provide alternative treatments for individuals suffering from recurrent infections or poor responses to conventional therapies, while also fostering collaboration between Egyptian academic and research institutions to support future medical innovations.
