Navi Pillay reacts to Nobel Peace Prize 2026

Naomi Laay was awarded the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize in recognition of her efforts to support and promote international law and human rights. Laay pointed out that the world is currently experiencing a period in which international legal institutions face political pressures and attacks, warning of the decline of the rule of law and the growing reliance on power politics at the expense of justice. She also emphasized the importance of maintaining the independence of courts and respecting the international legal system, which is fundamental for stability and peaceful coexistence. Laay is considered one of the leading human rights advocates, having led numerous prominent international causes, including the Gaza investigation committee that accused Israel of committing genocide, as well as her roles as a United Nations ambassador and Human Rights Commissioner. She received the award in Oslo on December 10th and is recognized as one of the leading legal figures who has pushed for holding accountable those responsible for human rights violations worldwide.
