Laila Eloui on risk fears limiting Egyptian cinema

During her participation in the El Gouna Film Festival, actress Leila Eloui discussed the challenges facing female-led roles in Egyptian cinema, with a focus on the decline in boldness and diversity in film topics. She pointed out that producers' fear of financial risk is a major reason for this decline, as they prefer to work on ideas that guarantee returns, leading to a decrease in bold and unconventional-themed works compared to previous eras. She emphasized that successful films close to the audience can still attract viewers and generate profits, despite the obstacles posed by changes in the film industry and audience behavior, citing successful examples such as "Rihla 404" and "El-Hawa Sultan." Eloui also reflected on past cinematic experiences, such as the film "El-Takhshiba," which carried bold themes, highlighting the importance of producers supporting new ideas to increase diversity and daring in filmmaking. She noted that an excessive focus on commercial profits hampers the presentation of innovative artistic experiments, and stated that Egyptian cinema is still engaging with industry and audience changes, while emphasizing the need to reclaim space for creativity and boldness—qualities that once distinguished Egyptian cinema in the past.
