Palm Auction Boosts Rare Varieties at Al Dhafra

The article highlights the organization of the "Date Palm Auction" for the first time as part of the "Al Dhafra Dates Festival," held in the Al Dhafra region of Abu Dhabi. The event aims to preserve native varieties and encourage the propagation of rare, high-value cultivars. The auction is focused on selling date palm palm crowns (saram and zurai’), following inspections to ensure their quality. Notably, the price of a saram from the "Zabyaani" variety reached 32,000 AED, reflecting strong interest from buyers in high-yield varieties. The auction’s goals include promoting sustainable local production, providing certified cultivars, exchanging agricultural expertise, and supporting the heritage of date palms—aligned with the Food Security Strategy 2051 and the objectives of World Food Day. Additionally, it aims to expand the use of dates and advance Abu Dhabi’s agricultural transformation policies, emphasizing innovation and the preservation of agricultural knowledge to ensure sustainable food availability for future generations.
