On October 30, 1961, the "Tsar Bomba" (RDS-220), the most powerful nuclear weapon in history, was detonated above Severny Island in the Novaya Zemlya archipelago in northern Russia. Its yield exceeded 50 megatons, making it ten times more powerful than all the munitions used in World War II, and more than 1,500 times the combined strength of the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombs. The explosion had a tremendous impact, lighting up the sun with a white flash, creating a fireball 8 kilometers across, a mushroom cloud rising to 64 kilometers high, and completely destroying the surrounding area. Despite the enormous explosion, the radiological impact was relatively low. This test remains one of the most prominent examples of nuclear arsenals and led to agreements aimed at banning nuclear tests.
