Egypt has for the first time begun importing a liquefied natural gas (LNG) shipment through the Damietta terminal, aiming to secure the local market’s natural gas needs during the summer season by utilizing the infrastructure of the Damietta liquefaction plant. The country plans to import around 12 LNG shipments throughout the year to meet the rising demand, as imports increased by 152% in the first quarter of 2026. The Ministry of Petroleum estimates the cost of these imports at approximately $10 billion to fulfill the needs of the electricity and industry sectors.
