Egypt raises household electricity thresholds by 12%

The Egyptian Ministry of Electricity and Energy has announced that the prices for the first tier of residential electricity consumption will remain unchanged, while the prices for the other tiers will be increased by an average of 12%. Egypt annually allocates approximately 100 billion Egyptian pounds (around 1.9 billion dollars) to cover cost differences, with the proportion paid by households rising as their consumption increases — reaching up to 88% for households using between 700 and 1,000 kilowatt-hours. This recent increase follows a previous hike of between 16% and 20% in April, which was prompted by the global energy crisis and attacks on Egyptian energy facilities, as well as heightened demand during the summer.
