Mexico and Peru announced the resumption of diplomatic relations between them after Lima severed ties in November 2025. The break occurred due to Mexico granting political asylum to former Peruvian Prime Minister Betsy Chávez, who was under judicial prosecution in Peru on charges of conspiracy and attempted coup. She left for Mexico after the Peruvian government issued a transit permit as a gesture of good faith, amid several weeks of dialogue between the two countries. It is worth noting that relations between the two deteriorated following the ousting of former President Pedro Castillo, who was jailed, while Chávez was released on bail and sought refuge at the Mexican embassy. Peru continues to consider Castillo's presidency illegal.
