UAE's 'Hayat' Program Boosts Organ Donation

UAE's 'Hayat' Program Boosts Organ Donation

The "Hayat" national program for organ donation and transplantation in the UAE has been implemented since 2017 and continues through June 2026. It has contributed to saving the lives of over 1,500 patients through organ transplants from 549 deceased donors. During this period, a total of 1,780 organs have been transplanted, including 924 kidneys, 502 livers, 181 lungs, 151 hearts, and 22 pancreases. The procedures are overseen by nine accredited centers, employing advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence and mechanical perfusion systems to achieve the highest success rates, with patient survival after one year reaching 96.5% for kidney transplants and 89.5% for other organs. Flexible policies and legislation, such as Federal Decree Law No. 25 of 2023, are fundamental in promoting a culture of donation and ensuring fair organ allocation. There has been a significant increase in the number of donors, rising by 35.5% in 2025 compared to 2024, alongside the expansion of donation programs from living donors and reciprocal donation initiatives. These efforts aim to meet the growing demand, as more than 4,000 patients are waiting for a chance at new life.
