India's power system is experiencing a historic shift from reliance on coal to the promotion of clean energy sources, especially solar power, which is close to overtaking coal in electricity generation. Between 2010 and 2026, solar capacity increased from 0.07 gigawatts to 211 gigawatts, making it the largest source of clean energy, with a capacity approaching that of coal, which stands at 254.4 gigawatts. Although coal plants continue to be built, investments are increasingly directed toward solar energy and the expansion of renewable sources, with capacities growing by about 80 gigawatts compared to just 5.4 gigawatts for coal plants between 2025 and 2026. While coal still dominates electricity generation, the capacity mix indicates a rapid transition in India's energy future, dropping from around 59% of the total capacity in 2014 to less than 40% in 2026. Meanwhile, clean energy sources are racing to take a larger role, despite the challenges of transforming all capacities into continuous and balanced power generation.
