Gaza's Guava Trees Decline

Gujar farmers in the southern Gaza Strip have inaugurated the guava season after three years of war that caused widespread destruction of agricultural lands and a significant decline in production due to shortages of water, electricity, chemicals, and fertilizers. The area cultivated with guava shrank from between 2,000 and 2,500 dunams to just about 200, leading to a drop in output to roughly 30% of previous levels. Farmers are suffering from the lack of basic agricultural supplies, in addition to damaged trees and security risks in some areas. Unemployment among youth has risen to around 70%, with hundreds of job opportunities destroyed. Approximately 87% of cultivated land has been affected, according to the FAO.
