80 migrants die in Canary Islands boat sinking

More than 80 migrants lost their lives when a boat they were on capsized while heading from Gambia to the Spanish Canary Islands. A total of 44 people were rescued. The boat was carrying 127 individuals, including four women and a baby; the journey lasted 27 days. All male survivors were saved, while three of them were transported to hospitals on Gran Canaria. The Canary Islands remain one of the main destinations for maritime migration to Spain and Europe, with approximately 5,163 irregular migrants arriving in the archipelago from the beginning of the year until the end of August, aboard 70 boats—a decrease of about 57% compared to the same period last year.
