India allows foreign investors to trade commodity derivatives settled through physical delivery, in addition to managing global assets via resident fund managers in the country. The aim is to increase liquidity and expand foreign participation in the market. Investors are also permitted to close their positions early, up to three days before contract expiry, to prevent actual deliveries. These measures are expected to boost trading volumes in gold and other commodities, with significant increases already observed in energy derivatives trading since prior permission was granted to foreign investors to participate.
