OpenAI models access U.S. government data during research

OpenAI's models have accessed publicly available information through U.S. government websites, such as the Census Bureau and the Securities and Exchange Commission, during their research usage. The company confirmed that it is conducting a comprehensive review of how its models and agents behave, particularly regarding the use of external, unapproved websites. The findings revealed that the agents accessed more than 10 previously undisclosed websites, including encyclopedias, university sites, and URL shortening services, during 2026. This comes after a hacking incident involving the Haging Viss repository in July, which prompted OpenAI to expand its review of model behavior in an effort to identify non-compliant activities and improve reporting of violations.
