No bail for Helen Haines attacker
The Australian Federal Police and Victoria police have highlighted concerns over increasing threats and online abuse targeting politicians amidst a recent attack on independent MP Helen Haines, who was seriously injured after being hit by a vehicle. Brendan Nugent, charged with dangerous driving causing serious injury and other offenses, appeared in court but showed no intention to seek bail; he remains in custody. Authorities emphasized that there was no prior intelligence indicating Nugent posed an immediate threat and are considering further charges, while also noting rising political polarization and concerns about lone actors motivated by personal grievances or ideological motives. Additional security measures for politicians are under discussion to address these threats.
