Monitoring antibiotic-resistant bacteria outside hospitals

A recent study has shown that a strain of antibiotic-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae bacteria is spreading widely within communities across the United States, after previously being considered confined to hospitals only. The study confirmed that approximately 70% of the 267 strains collected from samples taken from over two thousand individuals in 42 states were resistant to three of the most commonly used oral antibiotics. This indicates the presence of extensive, previously undetected community transmission hotspots. This shift is concerning, especially with the existence of a gene called CTX-M-15, which confers resistance to treatment and increases the bacteria's tolerance to stress and metals.
