A recent study has found that Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF) is an effective and inexpensive treatment to halt tooth decay in children and infants. It can be easily applied without the need for drilling. The results showed that the substance stopped decay in more than half of the primary teeth in over 800 children under the age of 6 when applied every six months, offering a simple and less invasive alternative to traditional treatments. Although SDF has been used in the United States since 2014 to treat tooth sensitivity, it has not yet been officially approved for treating cavities. However, the study's findings could pave the way for FDA approval, potentially allowing broader use—especially for children who have difficulty tolerating drilling procedures or who suffer from dental anxiety.
