AI designs novel viruses raises concerns

Researchers from Stanford University and the Arc Institute successfully used artificial intelligence to design complete genomes of bacteriophages, which are viruses that infect bacteria and do not attack humans. The AI models, which analyze patterns in DNA sequences, were trained on existing phage genomes and then proposed new sequences capable of replicating inside bacteria and killing them. Out of 285 designs, 16 resulted in active, live phages capable of reproducing and slowing or killing bacteria, focusing particularly on overcoming bacterial resistance to natural phages. This technique represents a promising step toward treating antibiotic-resistant bacterial infections with custom-designed phages, with the reassurance that the research did not involve designing viruses that infect humans or animals. However, careful regulation of the open use of this technology is essential to prevent potential risks.
