New therapeutic gum may prevent mouth cancer

A group of researchers has developed an effective therapeutic gum to combat three types of microbes associated with oral cancer, including human papillomavirus (HPV), which is one of the most widespread sexually transmitted viruses. The study showed that the gum reduced the HPV levels in saliva by 93%. The gum contains a protein from the kidney bean plant called FRIL, which causes viruses to clump together and prevents them from entering cells, in addition to reducing the ability of the existing viruses to continue infecting within cells. Its low cost is one of its most notable features. Researchers are awaiting FDA approval to proceed with clinical trials involving volunteers who will chew the gum three times a day for four weeks. Currently, the gum is viewed as an adjunct treatment alongside traditional cancer therapies, and researchers hope that in the future it will be available over-the-counter without the need for a prescription.
