A Dutch study has shown that a medication used to treat high blood pressure, guanabenz, may help slow the progression of a rare and fatal genetic disease known as Leukodystrophy, which affects children between the ages of 1 and 6. The results indicate that the treatment reduces the reliance on wheelchairs and increases the survival rate of children; none of the children who received the medication during the study died, compared to five children in the untreated group who passed away. Although side effects such as hallucinations and drowsiness were observed, most children tolerated the treatment well. Research continues to explore the effects of higher doses and to confirm the medication's long-term efficacy.
