Commerce Ministry Reports Wheat Sales Drop to 4.8M Tons

The wheat marketing total in Iraq for this year has decreased to around 4.8 million tons, despite achieving self-sufficiency three years ago through large quantities of high-quality harvests. In 2023, the total marketed was approximately 5.19 million tons, increasing the following year to 6.3 million, but then declining again in 2025 to 5.19 million, and continuing to decline in 2026 to 4.8 million tons. The ministry’s plan relies on securing a strategic stockpile until 2028, based on local production and reducing imports. It aims to achieve full self-sufficiency to face economic challenges and stabilize bread prices, in addition to disbursing financial payments to wheat farmers to support the continuation of farming.
