Germany ends 11-year Iraq mission
Germany has concluded its military mission in Iraq after 11 years of participation in the international coalition against ISIS. The last of its soldiers were evacuated from the Kurdistan Region at the Iraqi government's request, totaling 28 personnel. The German forces' mission, which began in 2015, focused on intelligence support and training the Peshmerga forces, with their numbers reaching around 500 at certain times. The withdrawal marks the completion of military support efforts but has raised concerns about a security vacuum and the potential resurgence of ISIS, especially given the ongoing activity of terrorist cells in the region. This step also coincides with the end of the American mission in Iraq and Baghdad's statements about its intention to restrict arms to the state and integrate fighters into security agencies.
