Iraq Retrieves 30,000 Artifacts
Iraq has managed to recover over 30,000 antiquities from illegal sources, including artifacts stolen from the Iraqi Museum and pieces removed from archaeological sites as a result of illegal excavations. International and local efforts continue to recover the artifacts held in countries such as the United States, Japan, Jordan, Morocco, and Lebanon, with negotiations ongoing for the return of items in Belgium, the Netherlands, and other countries. The government emphasizes the importance of cooperation with embassies and legal authorities to ensure the repatriation of these artifacts to Iraq, especially after the sites and treasures were looted following 2003, and as the smuggling of antiquities increased amid the worsening security situation in the country.
