Baghdad hosts Gulf 28 after 50 years
The Executive Committee of the Gulf Cooperation Council Football Federation has selected Baghdad to host the Gulf 28 Championship, scheduled from December 9 to 22, 2028. This marks a return to Baghdad after nearly half a century since the country last hosted the tournament's fifth edition in 1979. Baghdad becomes the third city to host the tournament, following the previous editions held in Baghdad in 1979 and Basra in 2023, where Iraq won the title in the most recent edition. The relevant authorities in Iraq will begin preparations to upgrade stadiums and sports facilities, develop infrastructure, and ensure the organization of the tournament is suitable, while also securing the security and logistical needs of the fans and Gulf national teams.
